Daughter refuses to sign new property documents with parents after discovering they changed the terms without her: ‘They shifted the majority of the risk onto me’

Do you need another proof of why you should never mix family and business?

Personally, the closest I have ever gone to mixing family and business was when I worked for my dad in the summer before my senior year of high school. It was two months of joining him for an 8-hour day in his office, and working as a basic secretary. I would answer calls, print documents, shred paper, and sort through dozens of decades-old binders. And if I'm being completely honest with you, those two months were more than enough for me. It's not that I don't love my dad; I truly think he's a great guy. I simply was not a fan of being his employee. It's so much better if we maintain a father-daughter relationship and not try to add other titles to the mix.

That is why when I read the story below on Reddit's r/amiwrong community, I could immediately tell that the daughter who wrote it made the mistake that I was trying to avoid since that one summer: she mixed business and family, and it did not end well.

This family, a daughter and her two parents, decided to make a joint investment in a property, and initially, they thought they had it covered. They had a clear, written agreement for years regarding the management of the asset, and overall, it was a pretty straightforward financial arrangement.

At least it was, until the parents decided to blindside their daughter and change the agreement without her knowledge. They simply rewrote the fundamental terms of the agreement and changed it so that she would be the one responsible for the maintenance costs, effectively shifting the majority of the risk to her and keeping the potential gains to themselves.

Obviously, when she read this new document, she knew there was no way she was signing it. In that moment, the daughter finally realized why everyone says not to mix family and business. Keep reading to find out too.
